Flooding occurs as a result of overflow of water
from water bodies like a lake, river, or ocean, wherein the water escapes from
its usual boundaries.
It may occur as a result of accumulation of
rainwater on a saturated ground. In a river, flood may also occur when the
water flow rate go beyond the capacity of the river channel.
It happens mainly at bends or meanders in
the waterway. Flood often causes damage to homes and businesses.
If you want to protect your home from
floods then you have to take some protective measures. You have to construct
your house keeping in mind some safety parameters.
During construction of any building, the
right use of scaffolding material can protect your home from any mishap.
For this you can contact a reputed
scaffolding material supplier who can offer you services like scaffolding material on hire.
Here are few precautions which can be
taken before and during the flood-prone season. These precautions can protect
your house and family from natural disasters.
1. Roof Protection:
Leaky roof is very annoying. It can wet the
floor and your furniture and can cause potential slips. You can speak to a
roofing specialist who can insert rubber underlays under your roofing tiles or sheets.
This can serve as a waterproof barrier and
can keep rain out.
2. Fix leaks immediately:
Leaky roof and foundation crack allows
water to get into your home. It can weaken the structure and provide a perfect
habitat for mold.
When you observe wet spots on the ceiling
or cracks in the foundation, fix them immediately. Check that roofing shingle is
secure.
3. Clear gutters and drains:
Choked gutters and water passages indicate
that surplus rainwater cannot flow away freely. Keep gutters and drainage
systems clean to carry water away from your home.
Check storm drains on your street. It is
necessary because leaves and debris can block them and can cause water
accumulation.
4. Proper water flow:
You have to study the water flow patterns
around your home. You can check whether the area seems to be clayey or it has
large puddles of water.
This is an important thing to note and
consider. In this way, before flooding has a chance you can plan accordingly.
5. Close foundation cracks:
It can be done with mortar and masonry
caulk or hydraulic cement. It expands and completely fills the gap and costs
you only a few rupees.
Do not patch solely with mortar or cement
as cracks develop again. Be sure to investigate other solutions for issues like
wet basements in case water is a recurring problem.
6. Flood insurance:
Most home insurance plans also do not cover
floods. Sometimes you may require an added flood protection policy.
When you first move into your house and you
came to know that your area is prone to flood, it can be a good idea to
consider flood insurance.
Reason being, any damage caused by the
disaster, is covered by your insurance company.
7. Anchor your fuel tanks:
Unanchored tanks may rupture, float, and
release fuel.
When the power sources of system units
(furnaces and water heaters) get disabled and the units get cooled, you can
also wrap them in waterproof tarps to minimize water damage.
8. Install French drains:
A French drain can collect water in your
yard and redirects it safely away from your house. Floods are a common challenge
that many home owners may face at one time or another.
Therefore by creating good drainage system
around your home, moving valuables out of water’s way and keeping your home in
good repair, you can stop or eliminate potential flood damage.
9. Prevent sewer backup:
You can also install septic line check
valves or sewer, which let waste flow only one way. Plan to spend some money
and install them.
You can otherwise do it by yourself and
ensure that sewage can’t back up into the standing water in your home.
10. Move expensive items to a
safer location:
You can move all your expensive items to a safer
location. If possible lift your water pumps and furnaces to a height of 12
inches above the highest known flood level for your area.
11. Take action:
If heavy rains hit and flooding have not
been avoided, do not get panic. Take an action. Bad flooding might mean there
is water inside your house.
Immediately shut off your electricity from
the main power source and shift all rugs, furniture and other valuables to
higher levels to prevent electrocution and property damage.
12. Flood evacuation plan:
Way before the flood, assemble a flood
kit i.e. flashlight, passport or ID proof,
money, clothes, handy phone numbers and come to an agreement with your family
with an emergency exit plan so that you can quickly grab what is required and
head out before things get worse.
13. Invest in a
battery-powered sump pump:
This device pumps water out of your home
and it can be an excellent defence against flooding unless they are powered by
electricity and the power is out. Battery-powered sump pump is a reasonably
priced solution.
